Further employment laws have been introduced and all County Durham employers should be aware of their implications.

From today, 5th December:

The Civil Partnership Act 2004 means same sex couples will be able to enter into a legally binding civil partnership which will allow them many of the same rights as married partners. Civil partners will also be entitled to survivors' pension benefits, in the same way as a widow or widower. Companies should check their equal opportunities policies, to ensure they cover discrimination against individuals who are in same sex civil partnerships, as well as checking their pension scheme rules

Sections of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 have come into force. People who are suffering from progressive conditions, such as HIV, cancer and MS are now protected against discrimination on the grounds of disability from the time they are diagnosed. Previously, they were protected only from the point when their condition has an adverse effect on their work. In addition, the requirement that mental illnesses be clinically well-recognised in order to be covered by the definition of disability has been removed.
